A decision support method for biochars characterization from carbonization of grape pomace

Grape pomace can be used to produce several products, such as, biofuels, fertilizers, or catalysts. This work focuses on the carbonization of grape assessing impact temperature and rate properties resulting biochars. The potential use produced biochars were analyzed by a multiple criteria decision method. To this end, particles 250 ?m carbonized in nitrogen atmosphere using horizontal electrically heated tube furnace. experiments carried out for temperatures between 300 800 °C residence times 30 75 min. characterized thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy. results reveal that i) biochar yields decrease from ~51% ~30% as increases °C; ii) at higher presents lowest H/C O/C ratios; iii) raw biomass thermal degradation hemicellulose, cellulose lignin occurred below 600 °C, while only decomposition happened; iv) present ashes with high contents magnesium, phosphorus, potassium calcium; v) obtained 400 500 is adequate biofertilizer biocatalyst application. For biofuel application best was °C.
